SOWP changes the wait

Many inland applicants receive a Spousal Open Work Permit in the first months, which makes a ~12-month journey livable. Its processing is separate from these PR milestones, but tracked members log it too.

Two-part approval

Sponsor approval (eligibility to sponsor) typically lands first and is a strong early checkpoint; the applicant's medical, background check and final decision continue after it.

Leaving Canada is risky

Inland processing assumes the applicant remains in Canada. Long trips during processing can complicate or derail the file - get professional advice before booking anything.

How long does inland spousal sponsorship take?+
IRCC targets about 12 months for most spousal files from a complete application. In community-tracked inland files, final decisions most commonly land in months 10–13, with eCOPR a few weeks after. The live official estimate for your stream is in IRCC's Check processing times tool.
When do inland applicants get the SOWP?+
Tracked applicants most commonly report the Spousal Open Work Permit arriving in months 2–5, around the biometrics-to-medical window. It's processed separately from the PR milestones on this page.
What does “sponsor approved” mean?+
IRCC has confirmed your sponsor meets the eligibility requirements to sponsor. It's an early positive checkpoint, typically in months 4–7 - the applicant-side checks continue after it.
Do inland spousal applicants get a PPR?+
Generally no - approvals conclude through the PR Confirmation Portal with an eCOPR, since the applicant is already in Canada. No passport request, no landing trip.
