Visa office sets the pace

The same milestone can differ by weeks - sometimes months - between offices. Log yours in the tracker to compare with files at the same office in your cohort.

Interview possible, not default

Most spousal files are decided on paper. An interview request usually means officers want to verify relationship evidence in person - strong, consistent documentation up front is the best prevention.

Ends with PPR + landing

After approval you submit the applicant's passport, receive the COPR (and visa if needed), and complete landing at a Canadian port of entry before the COPR expires.

How long does outland spousal sponsorship take?+
IRCC targets about 12 months for most spousal files. In community-tracked outland files, final decisions most commonly land in months 9–13, with the PPR within days to two weeks after - visa office workload creates most of the spread. Can my spouse visit Canada while the outland file processes?+
Often yes, with valid temporary status (TRV or eTA) and genuine temporary intent - but entry is never guaranteed and dual intent must be handled carefully. Get advice for your situation before booking travel.

Officers occasionally verify relationship genuineness in person, more often where evidence is thin, timelines are unusual, or histories are complex. Thorough, consistent relationship documentation up front is the best prevention.
